The local level in the spotlight
After a short welcome, two interactive discussion panels with representatives from the EU and the local level will shed light on the question of how we can shape our common future:
- Cultivating transformation: Cities setting climate action in motion
Transformation at the local level is in full swing. How has the role of municipalities changed in the process? What legal and financial framework conditions are necessary and what instruments are helpful?
- Revealing the invisible: Cultivating a just transition
Climate action must both address and involve everyone. But how can we ensure social policy that supports our climate goals? How can citizens' assemblies or energy communities help? And what can we do to fight energy poverty?
19 October, 15:00 – 17:00 | Camera di Commercio Modena | (EN)
Dive into our workshop space!
Four workshops, four topics. You choose!
- Workshop A: Rewriting the adaptation narrative
Implementing participatory approaches to adaptation and identifying the benefits can be challenging. In this interactive workshop we will take a look at the issue from the perspectives of nature, finance, business and health – and rewrite the narrative together.
- Workshop B: Shaping our built environment
High quality, targeted communication and careful urban planning are key considerations for municipal players looking to retrofit old buildings and develop new areas. Come with your challenges and get advice from peers in this interactive workshop!
- Workshop C: Municipal solutions for energy poverty
Energy poverty is increasingly in the spotlight, but what can cities and towns do about it? Involving energy-poor citizens and enabling municipal staff on the road to a socially just energy transition is of the essence. Join the discussion and get inspired by real solutions!
- Workshop D: Real answers versus false solutions
Avoiding dead-ends and taking real climate responsibility instead – Climate Alliance's new Climate Fund, the introduction of a local CO2 price and a focus on decentralised renewables instead of a large-scale hydrogen economy make this possible. Let's discuss together!
Have you registered to our workshop on energy poverty? Check out Energy Cities' Workshop on the previous day "Energy for the invisible citizen: in search for lasting & fair solutions" (18 October, 9:00 – 12:00 | Hostel Modena San Filippo Neri). Energy Cities brings together all those who are fighting energy poverty to explore the mistakes and the respective lessons learned in the different EU initiatives and projects. Learn more

Focus Group Discussion: Visualising building energy performance
Attention municipalities and energy agencies: with this event we want to better understand municipal needs when it comes to making energy efficiency in buildings visible. The event is part of the CrossCert project, which is developing recommendations to improve the accuracy and usability of energy performance certificates. Interested? You can register here.
Please note that registration for the focus group discussion is not via the general conference registration, but exclusively via the link provided here.

Public conference: Modena città d’acqua
This conference will delve into strategies and ideas for planning and water management in the 'sponge city' of the future. It further intends to initiate a reflection on how to favour adaptation to climate change and the city's water resilience, starting from ideas already adopted by cities in the European context and with a look at what companies in Modena are doing and intend to do.
