Adaptation Working Group meeting on just resilience

Time: 10 – 11:30

As increasing attention is placed on building Europe's resilience to climate change, there is growing recognition that particular groups of people face disproportionate risks that must be addressed if we are to ensure adaptation actions ''leave nobody behind''. The 2021 EU adaptation strategy introduced the notion of ‘just resilience’, emphasising that the impacts of climate change are not felt equally by all groups and that achieving resilience in a just and fair way is essential for the equitable distribution of climate adaptation benefits. Although EU and national climate policies increasingly draw attention to vulnerable groups and emphasise the need for equitable adaptation solutions, the practical implementation of such solutions is not yet sufficiently undertaken.

We would like to discuss this topic at our December Adaptation Working Group meeting. We will delve into the ''what, why, and how'' of Just Resilience across Europe.

  • We will be joined by European Environment Agency Expert Dr Hanne van den Berg, who leads the agency’s Just Resilience work to learn more about what Just Resilience is and why it is important.
  • We will also share some early insights from the forthcoming EEA’s 2025 Just Resilience report that focuses on how the adaptation actions of cities, regions and countries across Europe may inadvertently exacerbate existing injustices. We will also provide examples from the report of actions that consider justice upfront and result in a reduction of such injustices.
  • As always, there will be ample time for discussions and sharing of experiences.
