Cities on the road to climate neutrality – reports from Dijon Métropole and the city of Aachen
Time: 10 – 12
This workshop will showcase experiences made with so-called 'Climate City Contracts' to overcome structural, institutional and cultural barriers on the way to climate neutrality. Dijon Métropole (FR) and the city of Aachen (DE) are among the 112 cities selected to participate in the EU mission for 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030, also known as the Cities Mission. These 112 cities are considered pioneers in the implementation of climate neutrality on their urban territory. Their experiences should serve as a guide for other European cities that are also setting themselves such ambitious goals.
The implementation of the Cities Mission is supported by the EU project NetZeroCities. The aim of the project is to help cities overcome the current structural, institutional and cultural barriers in order to become climate-neutral by 2030. A core instrument of the Cities Mission is the Climate City Contract (CCC). This is a type of binding climate city contract that contains the city's climate protection strategy including an action plan, involves all relevant stakeholders in the process and is linked to an investment plan. After months of hard work, Aachen has finalised its Climate City Contract in autumn and Dijon Métropole is about to do the same. Finally, the Franco-German Institute (DFI) will present some of the results of its research on supporting cities within the framework of the EU mission and national processes to accelerate their path to climate neutrality.
The speakers are:
- Kristine Hess-Akens, City of Aachen, Strategic Projects Unit, EU Mission "100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities 2030"
- Rouchette Hadrien, Engineer Head of EU Projects for the Energy Transition Dijon Métropole
- Dominik Grillmayer, political scientist and research associate at the Franco-German Institute
