Soil – A coveted, limited resource worth protecting

What are the challenges for socio-ecological change in municipalities?

In times of climate crisis, open and green spaces provide important ecosystem services. These include carbon storage, water absorption and storage as well as the preservation of biodiversity. Soils contribute to the quality of life of people in cities, for example by reducing heat stress. Their conservation and sparing use, as well as limiting sealing, is therefore essential to make our cities liveable and more resilient to the consequences of the climate crisis. At the same time, local authorities need the land to fulfil the tasks of social urban development, such as housing construction for the common good or school construction. However, given rising land prices, tight municipal budgets and pressure on the housing market, land is a highly sought-after resource. This poses major challenges for local authorities.

As part of the TANDEM annual workshop, we will discuss policies to prevent soil sealing at European, French and German level together with experts and representatives of local authorities. The implementation of these strategies will be illustrated by ambitious local examples.
