Gran Canaria launches a climate change awareness campaign
The Climate Alliance member Gran Canaria has unveiled a bold new campaign to educate and inspire the public about the urgent need to combat the climate crisis and its growing impact on the island. At the heart of the campaign is a compelling video designed to provoke reflection on the stark realities of global heating, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest challenges of our time.
Raúl García Brink, Gran Canaria’s Councilor for Environment, Climate, Energy, and Knowledge, emphasized that the campaign seeks not only to inform but also to empower citizens to take action. "Gran Canaria is already experiencing the effects of climate change, but we are not standing idly by," García Brink stated. "We are spearheading sustainable, concrete projects to mitigate its consequences. Our message is clear: every resident of this island has a role to play. Together, we can make a difference, and there is still time to act."
The campaign’s dedicated landing page outlines several transformative projects championed by the Island Council to combat climate change and build resilience. This initiative forms a cornerstone of Gran Canaria’s Island Strategy for Climate Change Adaptation and Low-Carbon Economy Development, which sets out a clear roadmap to integrate environmental sustainability into island planning, reduce vulnerability to climate change, and advance the energy transition.
