International Day of Indigenous Peoples 2024: Strengthening the rights of indigenous peoples

Today is the International Day of Indigenous Peoples. This year, the UN is focussing on protecting the rights of indigenous peoples in (voluntary) isolation and first contact. There are currently still around 200 groups of indigenous peoples who live in voluntary seclusion, choosing to avoid contact with outsiders. These peoples are particularly dependent on their ecological environment and any changes to their habitat have a major impact on their lives. Nevertheless, they are not spared from developments in the rainforests of our world. Industrial agriculture, mining, the extraction of natural resources and tourism are increasingly leading to deforestation and the destruction of their habitat.

Climate Alliance has been following these developments for years and is working to support its indigenous partners in the Amazon region with various programmes. Climate Alliance's funds for Amazonia, such as the Legal Aid Fund, offer concrete support in this regard. With this fund, we support indigenous activists in the fight for their rights, for example by covering legal fees and procedural costs. In addition, there is also the Renewable Energy Fund and the Climate Fund helping to preserve the indigenous territory of the Wampís in Peru. This gives local authorities in Europe the opportunity to make a direct contribution to rainforest protection and to take climate responsibility.
